Gastroesophageal Acid Reflux Disease (GERD)
GERD is injury to the esophagus that develops from chronic exposure of the esophagus acid coming up from the stomach (acid reflux).Heartburn is a symptom of acid in the esophagus characterized by burning, warmth or heat behind the breastbone (sternum). Patients who have heartburn often are at a much higher risk of developing GERD. Those that have GERD can have a change of the cells in the esophagus which is linked with esophageal cancer. Obstructive Sleep Apnea causes nocturnal GERD. The treatment of OSA patients usually improved their GERD.
